Case-based teaching materials: The Pedicases website contains more than 30 self-contained educational modules, covering important topics in child growth, development, behavior, and adolescent health. Each contains a 2 – 3 part case narrative, handouts, an annotated bibliography, comprehensive facilitator’s guide specific to the individual case, and evaluation forms. The materials are designed to allow teaching sessions to be conducted by either faculty or properly prepared trainees.

Case Narrative: Most case narratives are divided into three parts.

  • Part I: Patient presentation and prompts discussion of the differential diagnosis.
  • Part II: Additional history, physical examination and diagnostic test results and prompts a discussion of treatment possibilities.
  • Part III: Gives a general idea of the patient's outcome.

Handouts: Handouts either supply supplemental information to the case narrative or summarize key teaching points. Specific suggestions on how handouts should be used are included.

Bibliography: Several citations, usually general reviews or book chapters, are chosen for brief annotation and listed under "Suggested Readings." Where appropriate, the reference page includes contact information for national organizations and educational resources on the World Wide Web.

Facilitators Guide: A comprehensive facilitator’s guide specific to each case includes;

  • Abstract outlining the importance of the case topic, why the case was written and what content will be covered.
  • Goal statement
  • Learning objectives
  • Themes, key words and Bright Futures key concepts
  • Materials
  • Suggested facilitator preparation.
  • Step-by-step guide to teaching the case including brief discussions of key teaching points.

Evaluation Forms: Each case module includes two evaluation forms; one to be completed by Facilitators (teachers) and the other to be completed by Learners (students).
